Mazda - In the Beginning

In 1920 Mr. Jujiro Matsuda along with a small group of investors took over a small cork producing company named Abemaki Tree Cork Company. They renamed the company Toyo Cork Kogyo, Ltd. and intended to grow the company out of cork production and into industrial production. The company was reformed in 1927 and renamed Toyo Kogyo Kaisha. By 1929 the company produced machine tools as well as their first motor vehicle. They performed a test run of 30 tri-cycle trucks and by 1931 these same tri-cycle trucks were being exported to China. They named it the "Mazda-Go-a". In 1934 the company became known as Mazda. They started making small eight wheeled trucks and took on their first trade-marked logo. Production was halted somewhat due to WWII and a little less than half the factory was destroyed in bombings. After rebuilding, they production and development resumed and in 1959 Mazda came out with a new emblem that was put on all of their production cars.

Mazda comes to the US

In 1970 Mazda established Mazda Motor of America, Inc. The R100 Coupe was introduced and was the first mass-produced rotary-powered car in America. Next Mazda introduced the RX-2, along with the piston engined 808 sedan, coupe and wagon. They followed that up with the RX-3 and in 1973, the RX-3 was the first vehicle in the world to pass strict new US standards for regulating exhaust emissions. Mazda introduced the sporty RX-7 as well as their 626 series in 1978. In 1983 the RX-7 was named as Car and Driver 10 Best and the Mazda 626 was awarded Motor Trend "Import Car of the Year".

Mazda Milestone and Awards

Mazda continued moving forward producing more innovative and sporty vehicles including the MX-5 Miata. In 1999 the MX-5 Miata celebrated its 10th anniversary with special edition model and received numerous accolades including it's fifth 10 Best Award from Car and Driver, Named to consumer digest "Best Buy" list, " Convertible" in Motorweeks Driver's Choice Awards and One of Sport Compact Car's "Eight Great Rides".
